Intore is a Rwandan dance performed by a troupe. The dancers are arranged in lines representing the ranks of warriors on a battlefield. Through their movements, they imitate a battle against an invisible enemy, jumping and brandishing their spears and shields to the rhythm of traditional drums and horns. They are supported by songs and poems that convey triumph and strength.
Traditionally, Intore dancers were selected by their leaders to undergo training in an institution known as the Itorero, where they learned cultural values, principles of governance, public speaking techniques, traditional games, and other performing arts. Today, this practice is widespread. In addition to the national ballet, which operates at a national level, other dance troupes are spread across the country. Training sessions are regularly organized by schools and universities, and the practice is also transmitted within families and communities.
As an expression of victory and power, Intore dance lies at the heart of community events and celebrations, including weddings, the reception of honored guests, and harvest festivals. The establishment of dance organizations and the coordination of festivals and cultural events centered around the dance have played an important role in promoting social cohesion among Rwandans.
