The Polonaise is a joyful Polish group dance that can be performed by just a few couples or by several hundred, marching in a procession following a path led by the first couple. The basic step of the polonaise involves bending one leg while stepping forward with the other. During the dance, couples perform various figures. With hands joined and raised high, they form arches under which other participants pass.
Because the polonaise follows a moderate tempo, even inexperienced participants can observe others and follow the dance. Today, the tradition of the polonaise is closely associated with high school graduation balls. In some communities, it is also danced at weddings, New Year’s Eve balls, carnival celebrations, and other festive occasions.
The practice is generally passed down within families, schools, dance groups, and local communities. Widely present in Polish culture, literature, music, and cinema also help raise public awareness about this dance and its social significance.
As a form of communal celebration, the polonaise marks important moments in family and community life and symbolizes cooperation, reconciliation, and equality. Since it is often danced by people of all ages and backgrounds, it also promotes unity, solidarity, and dialogue.
